Casino Royale: 007 Beats SMERSH at Baccarat

By: Jack Reider

Prior to popular opinion, Dr. No was not the first book written by Ian Fleming featuring James Bond as the leading character. Casino Royale was the first but it was not the first movie adapted to the James Bond series as we know it. Casino Royale was adapted twice to the small screen and once to the big screen without much success.
But this time around it is going to be different. Daniel Craig is the actor chosen to replace Pierce Brosnan as Bond, and its going to be a rough ride. Even as soon as after he was selected, fans got together and began to criticize the choice especially for his blond hair and relatively shortness. (He is the shortest Bond ever). They organized a petition, and the production company took notice but went ahead with the movie hoping that his acting will change their minds in what promises to be an action-packed movie.
Casino Royale, true to its name, centers around playing baccarat in a casino. James Bond plays against Monsieur Le Chiffre, one of the top SMERSH operatives who has been sent to the casino in order to win money that can be used to fund terrorist activities. The action, or at least the gaming action, takes place in a beautiful casino on the French Riviera.
The objective of James Bond is to defeat Chiffre and increase his gambling debts so that SMERSH will have him killed. The game chosen is Chemin de Fer. They play head to head and the lead moves from one to the other but eventually James Bond gains the upper hand and winds. Chiffre procures tremendous losses and SMERSH assassinates him. But before that he manages to capture and torture Bond using the vixen double-bubble agent, Vesper Lynd, who was supposed to be acting as an assistant to James Bond.
What is Chemin de Fer?This is an easy to learn and easy to play game. The dealer deals two hands and the players compete against each other to receive a larger hand. One player takes on the role of the banker and the other the player. This is similar to the American version where the dealer hands out two hands and then each player can bet either on the cards they received or on the cards that the dealer receives. Baccarat as it is played at land and online casinos is not exactly as flashy as in the movies, but it is not very different. People who play Chemin de Fer or baccarat usually dress up in style and are usually among the higher classes of society. The chairs around the baccarat tables are generally well-padded and champagne flows like water.
The storyline was adapted into a movie twice and even once for the small screen but this time around its going to be grand. Whether it’s a box-office hit or not is a mystery to all but it will make huge headlines in either case because it the twenty-first adaptation of the James Bond series and the first with Daniel Craig. A major difference between the book and the movie is that baccarat will no longer take center stage but another game more popular today: Texas holdem.
